If a rabbi has given hundreds of shiurim, is a student obligated to agree with every single word?
Q. What is considered Oral Torah? If an Orthodox Rabbi had hundreds of shiurim do I have to agree with every single word they said? Like if I read in a current Sefer on Mussar is that considered I’m not allowed to disagree with a single word? What if one Rabbi doesn’t agree with another?
This is the concept of “Aseh l’cha Rav”, that you must choose a Rav, whom you follow his halachic decisions, whether they be lenient or strict. You should choose a Rav with whom you agree with his general philosophy, e.g. if you are Zionist, you should follow a Zionist rabbi. Regarding commentaries on the Torah, mussar or philosophy, the field is much more open and every Jew is commanded to strive for truth, based upon the classic sources. You need not always follow the same commentary. The Oral Law includes all of the different legitimate commentaries, “there are 70 facets to the Torah”.
